They say a “picture is worth a thousand words.” Almost everyone can agree that posing is one of the most important elements of starting out in the modeling industry.
Regardless of your experience level, practicing at all times during your career is essential to becoming a successful model. Here are 5 posing tips from Latitude Talent Studios for models of all backgrounds.
- Know what type of shoot you’re getting into
There are many types of photoshoots and each and every single one requires different types of poses and movement in front of the camera. An editorial shoot, also known as high fashion, will most likely require different poses than a commercial or fitness photoshoot. Knowing what kind of photoshoot and the message the photographer is wanting to convey is essential for the model.
Some photoshoots for brands come with a mood board which reflects the clients or photographer’s image they wish to create. Study this prior to the shoot to prepare for the day.
- Learn from other models
If you’re not sure what kind of poses or movements to make on set, find some inspiration from other models online. Also check out modeling agencies websites to see what their models look like and try to replicate that in your portfolio.
Also, try to find models that have a similar build and look that you have. This can help with finding the best angles and poses to choose from.
- Practice all your angles (and sides)
We all have one side that seems to photograph better than the other in pictures. Finding your good angles or “good side” before a photoshoot can help it flow more smoothly. Practice in the mirror or on your phone to get inspiration when you actually shoot.
- Movement
When in front of the camera try to move as much as you can, you don’t want to look like a deer in headlights! Do not stand still and just smile. This will create life-less photographs which no one will use. When the photographer is shooting, they are typically shooting many images at one time. Try to change your expressions and body movement to ensure each photograph is different.
- Facial expressions are important!
Just like a tense body, having no facial expressions in pictures also doesn’t photograph well. Play around with many different emotions and don’t be afraid to try different faces. At the end of the day, posing is an art form and is welcomed by photographers. It is important to remember not every image in a photoshoot will be used, so feel free to play around and be comfortable.
