Raised in the urban area of the DMV, Welton Bonner, aka “Chief Welton” has a desire and passion to promote positivity and change through his rap lyrics.
Starting 2022 out the right way, pastor and rapper Welton dropped his new soon-to-be hit single, “On God.” The single is a trap-style anthem for people of faith to declare their confidence in God in a world that tries to make us ashamed of Him. However, confidence in God means that we can be transparent about not only our victories but also our past failures trusting that God is faithful in both. This is a song that you can dance to and have fun with friends while listening to it,” Welton explains.
Film Director, Micah Trostle from Trostle Films gives us a bit of insight about the song’s release as well as a new music video; “It happened so randomly, our connection and partnership in creating a film for this song. I grew up in Papua New Guinea and another family there had a daughter that graduated from the same school I did, about ten years before me. I had been Facebook friends with their family for years but never really had met Welton in person. One night, I was scrolling on FB (which I rarely do) and I saw Welton’s post about wanting to connect with someone for a video. I messaged him, and the rest was history. The coolest and most touching part of this project, however, was while we were shooting this video in DC, he would literally stop and talk to any random person, and simply just talk to them, or encourage them, or even pray for them. There were times when I wanted to just get the shot done, but Welton would be merely chatting and laughing away with a stranger passing by to ask what we were doing. That right there was a testament to his leadership, and more specifically his lyrics in his song, which talk about the person you can become when you put your life “On God.” It was more than just a learning moment for me, for sure. Welton is so talented with his music, we are working with the goal in mind to get him a deal with Reach Records, the largest label for Christian HipHop/Rap. I know that if he keeps working hard like he is now, they will pick him up in no time.
As described in his song, “On God,” Chief Welton is unafraid to speak about who matters most to him and the struggles and pain that he’s experienced. “I pray that my art will inspire you to be who God created you to be, even if you aren’t religious. Please add “On God” to your playlists so that we can continue to reach the world with positive messages that will inspire confidence and faith.
