Famous Musicians Who Battled Drug and Alcoholism

The dust is yet to settle on the tragic passing of Liam Payne, a former member of the famed British boy band One Direction. He fell to his death from the third floor of an exquisite Buenos Aires hotel on the evening of October 16, 2024, with police and an autopsy report confirming the presence of drugs in his room and system.

Liam Payne’s death is a reminder that music superstars, even with their wealth and fame, also fight their own battles. Oftentimes, it is depression due to the intense pressure they face as famous figures. Many of these celebrities resort to alcoholism and substance abuse, which can have destructive effects on them and their career. In extreme cases, many have had their lives cut short. Here are a few instances of musicians who have struggled with drugs and alcoholism.

Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato’s drug addiction struggles started at a young age. The talented pop star recalled that her mother had to lock up the opiates she was using after an accident when she saw that young Demi was taking too many pills. As Lovato grew older, she moved on to alcohol, coke, and other hard drugs.

She was always looking to break her addiction, and after several attempts, she managed to stay clean for 6 years, which she even celebrated with an announcement on X in 2018 (known as Twitter then). Then, she suffered a relapse a few months later. It was a catastrophic relapse that nearly took her life after she used cocaine laced with fentanyl in July 2018. The accidental overdose left her hospitalized for several days.

Lovato has since checked into a sober house that provided her with quality rehab, the kind you will get at Harp Rehab Melbourne, and continues to fight on even as she admits that breaking an addiction is a long process that takes time.

Juice WRLD

Known for his artistically strong and candid lyrics, which he infuses with heavy metal beats to produce a unique melodic rap, Jarad Anthony Higgins was already a global music star by the end of 2019. But just like many other personalities in the emo rap genre, Juice WRLD battled with depression, and he resorted to opiates as a coping mechanism. A long-term drug user, Juice Wrld’s drug intake increased after he found fame. Juice WRLD was open and honest about his addiction struggles, and he even actively sought help.

Unfortunately, he never got a solution until the addiction consumed him in December 2019 after he suffered a seizure during a raid on his private jet by federal authorities searching for drugs. He was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His death was later revealed to be caused by toxic levels of oxycodone and codeine.

Lil Peep

Another fast-rising American rapper in the emotional ‘emo’ rap sub-genre, Gustav Åhr, more commonly known as Lil Peep, had his life cut short following a drug overdose in 2017. Just like Juice WRLD, Lil Peep had been quite expressive about his mental health and, drug addiction and drug addiction. Despite this, he didn’t consider alcohol, drug & gambling rehab in Melbourne or any of the numerous rehab options at his disposal. When he took a nap a few hours before a scheduled performance in Tucson, Arizona, on November 15, 2017, he would never wake up again. The toxicology report indicated that he had extremely high levels of fentanyl, Xanax, cocaine, marijuana, Tramadol, and a host of other opiates in his system at the time of his death. At just 21 years of age, Lil Peep became yet another star lost to the American drug epidemic that continues to rage on to date.

Post Malone

Post Malone is another big name in the music industry who has had issues with alcoholism. While he appears to have overcome his alcohol addiction and insists he doesn’t have a drug abuse issue, his past struggle with alcoholism is a point of reference for anyone battling alcoholism to know that it is not an insurmountable condition.

Mac Miller

Mac Miller admitted to getting strung on promethazine and lean in order to deal with stress when on tour. Although he ditched promethazine by the end of 2012, he had picked up many other harmful drugs. By the time Miller’s assistant found him unresponsive at home on September 7, 2018, he was in the middle of a criminal trial for driving under the influence and hit and run. The LA County Coroner ruled that he died from an accidental overdose, with cocaine, fentanyl, and alcohol, among others, found in his system in unhealthy amounts.

Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber has had his fair share of Xanax and alcohol addiction. Breaking into the limelight at such a tender age could not have been easy for Bieber, and his reaction followed the trend of Hollywood – an unhealthy habit of heavy drinking, abuse of prescription pills, and coke use. Nevertheless, unlike many Hollywood stars, Bieber opted not to go to a rehab center and sought the help of his pastor friend Carl Lentz instead. Thankfully, the soon-to-be dad is now past his addiction problems.

Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey’s journey with alcohol addiction started in high school, and her parents had to send her to boarding school to wean her off her addiction. This did not work, and Del Rey picked up more dangerous substances instead. This lifestyle affected her in many ways, not the least in her relationships. Having received help, she has been sober for nearly two decades now.

Takeaway

Alcohol and drug addiction can happen to anyone. Getting help as quickly as possible is the way to go before the devastating consequences start to kick in. In this regard, rehab Melbourne is one of the most reliable global providers of the right rehabilitation services to help you break your addiction.
