In recognition of Self-Improvement Month this September, we sat down with Jessica Chin Fong to explore her story in the marketing field. Jessica has turned numerous challenges into opportunities, and in this article, she shares her experiences and the strategies that have contributed to her success.
Jessica Chin Fong’s love for advertising began at an early age. Growing up in Venezuela, she was captivated by the ads in her father’s Fortune 500 magazines from the ’80s. Although she couldn’t understand the clever English taglines, the visuals spoke to her imagination. This early fascination planted the seed for a career, leading her to navigate some of the most unpredictable times in the marketing world.
From Fascination to Expertise
Today, Jessica is a marketing professional known for her expertise in social media strategy, with experience working for global brands like Orangetheory Fitness, Travelpro International, and Atlantic Luggage. Her background in agency work gave her a unique blend of creative flair and analytical skills, setting her apart in an industry where both are crucial.
One of her most notable achievements came during her time at Orangetheory Fitness, where she was featured in one of GRIN’s influencer marketing case studies for her success in their campaigns. This came at a time when the pandemic had severely impacted in-person fitness concepts, and fitness brands were struggling to retain memberships and engagement.
Navigating the Pandemic: A Turning Point
“After COVID-19 hit, everything felt uncertain,” Jessica recalls. “Members were still freezing their memberships, and attendance was at an all-time low.” The challenges were immense, but social media and influencer marketing allowed the brand to remain visible during a time when gyms were largely closed. “Thanks to influencer marketing, we were able to reach 1.4 million impressions and log a 90% client booking rate of those people who used the influencer’s link,” she shares.
This period became a turning point in her career. With her immediate boss falling victim to layoffs and no established playbook for the evolving marketing landscape, Jessica found herself stepping into increased leadership responsibilities. While her more experienced colleagues focused on maintaining stability, she was handed projects that ventured into uncharted territory. “Honestly, I don’t think they gave me these projects because they trusted me,” Jessica reflects. “It was more about their job security. If things went wrong, I would take the fall. But if I succeeded, it benefited the whole team.”
While some of her acquaintances indulged in TikTok trends and sourdough baking, Jessica burned the midnight oil, determined to seize the opportunities the uncertainty presented. The risk paid off, cementing her reputation as a bold marketer. She also secured a mention in Vogue Business, featuring her team’s influencer marketing success.
Lessons in Growth and Opportunity
Jessica’s journey highlights the power of embracing challenges. She turned setbacks into opportunities for growth. For her, success is about seizing every chance to move forward and continually growing into a better version of oneself. Her story is a reminder that while challenges are inevitable, they also offer the greatest opportunities for growth.
