Overlake Medical Center & Clinics has implemented an Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool called Dragon Ambient eXperience (DAX™) Copilot. This Microsoft product combines conversational, ambient, and generative AI to automatically draft clinical notes and summaries during patient visits. The software drafts notes in real-time and immediately translates them into Overlake’s electronic health record system, Epic. This process reduces the administrative burden on providers, allowing them to spend more time providing care and less time on paperwork. Providers can also avoid the extra work after clinic hours, which is often referred to as “pajama time”. This technology not only increases operational efficiency but also improves the patient experience. Additionally, it helps to reduce burnout and increase provider satisfaction and retention.
“The psychological benefits have been the best part of this application,” says Christy Chan, MD, Overlake Clinics family medicine physician. “The burden of having to remember all the details and urgency of closing notes is significantly removed.”
A recent survey conducted among 1,000 clinicians who used DAX technology showed that they were able to save 7 minutes per patient encounter on average by reducing the time spent on notetaking. Additionally, 79% of respondents reported that they experienced a better work-life balance, and 70% said that this software helped them alleviate feelings of burnout and fatigue.
DAX Copilot is an advanced software that utilizes OpenAI’s GPT-4 model. It is powered by the capabilities of the Microsoft Azure cloud, which is certified by the Health Information Trust Alliance (HITRUST®) and supports federal laws that restrict the release of medical information. This software also reduces the potential for human error in the charting process, thereby increasing accuracy.
