The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank received a generous donation of 100,000 avocados from Avocados from Peru on National Avocado Day, July 31st. Grocery distributor Grocery Outlet Bargain Market will deliver the avocados to the Food Bank’s Miramar warehouse on a semi-truck.
Fresh produce is one of the many food options the Food Bank provides as the county’s regional food safety net to 400,000 people, on average, per month.
“Avocados from Peru is proud to contribute 100,000 avocados to the San Diego Food Bank’s efforts to address food insecurity in San Diego County and provide nutritious food like our avocados to local families,” said Xavier Equihua, President & CEO of the Peruvian Avocado Commission.
Mark your calendars! On the same day, six teams from various local TV and radio stations will compete in the second annual “Guac-Off” Challenge at the Food Bank’s Miramar warehouse. They will be preparing their best guacamole to win the silver avocado trophy. Last year’s champion, R Dub! of Local Media San Diego’s Magic 92.5, will defend his title against competitors from 91X FM, Z90.3 FM, 100.7 BIG FM, FOX 5 San Diego, and KUSI. This friendly competition, established last year, celebrates Avocados from Peru’s first donation to the San Diego Food Bank while also raising awareness of the Food Bank’s mission.
“The San Diego Food Bank is grateful to Avocados from Peru for their continued support! Their generous donation of avocados will significantly boost our efforts to continuously provide the nutrient-rich fresh produce helping the families we serve fill nutritional gaps they may be experiencing,” said Casey Castillo, CEO of the San Diego Food Bank.
The avocados will be distributed through the Food Bank’s direct food distributions and their network of over 500 nonprofit partners countywide in San Diego County.
