Social media has changed the way we communicate with one another. However, many people want something more in-depth and less comparative. Social media encourages constant comparing, which leads to anxiety and disappointment. There is a constant drain that comes with mindlessly scrolling on social media that affects many people. A major study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found that young adults who used social media most frequently were more likely to report feeling socially isolated than those who used it less, even after controlling for other factors (Primack et al., 2017).

Fortunately, there are meaningful alternatives to social media that provide a real connection without all the pressure. Positive alternatives will let you know your feelings, where you find yourself connected, more positive, and less distracted. Alternatives to social media let you communicate more through verbal means, share experiences, and even involve some positive written engagements.

Why Are We Looking for Social Media Alternatives

The social media platforms that we interact on daily allow us to share the best of our experiences, while the worst are hidden. An unfortunate paradox is that we share posts for the approval of friends, and in the end, we feel isolated, lonely, and disconnected. An even more unfortunate development of frequent social media use is the mental breakdown we criticize ourselves for being unworthy, unprofessional, and unappealing. A better option is to refrain from passive social media interaction and communication. We must replace impulsive comments and likes with real communications involving quality, deep conversations, experiences, and engagements. Social media alternatives unite friends in real interactions.

Voice-First Connections: The Power of Real Conversation

For those valuing genuine communication over interactions saturated by superficial internet traffic, reverting back to pen and paper, or even better, human voice, recycles traditional values. Unlike emails, text posts, or messages, verbal communication conveys lots of emotional content and demonstrates a less premeditated stance by the speaker.

Although regular comments or “likes” posts sustain a weak and vague sense of interaction, a 10-min phone call directed to a true friend or family member often generates a much closer and substantially more meaningful relationship. An even more favorable dynamic seems to be present when the channels of communication involve creating and receiving voice messages. Voice messages, compared to phone calls or instant messaging, seem to offer people a chance to balance convenience and spontaneity. Beyond voice threads, many people seem to have experienced a higher relative sense of happiness and pleasantness when the channels of interaction are voice clips in comparison to text threads.

In-Person and Local Experiences

Face-to-face communication certainly is unique, but most people do not have the luxury of indulging in such communication whenever the occasion arises, even when it is wholesome, relaxing, and enjoyable.

Simple interactions like saying “Hi” to someone in the park or even attending a neighborhood event can help ground us in a world consumed by technology. There is a sense of joy in the little, neighborly interactions. It serves as a wonderful reminder that technology is not required to make important connections.

Social Media Alternatives

Social media really is not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. Journaling, reading, cooking, gardening, or any other hobby can help reignite that internal flame that we sometimes forget about. When we’re grounded and in touch, we encounter the world proudly, and the joy of our engagement becomes more inspiring to others.

Friends can nourish their social skills as they decrease their social media participation. In doing so, individuals can form more personal, genuine friendships. Instead of posting basic interactions, they make phone calls or handwrite letters to their friends. No texting and poetic posts about the endless, beautiful interactions to choose from.

Friends can start to engage in slower forms of communication, like letter writing or heartfelt voice notes. They can find greater enjoyment in communication. Hearing the voice of the person you are close with is so much better than reading something they wrote an hour prior. It tells you so much more about how the person communicating with you is feeling.

Slower methods of interaction offer a friendliness that we humans inherently value. In communication that is slower, we often show more care to our friends that we are speaking with. Intentional communication makes the world less of a spectacle and more enjoyable for the person interacting with you.

How to Cut Back Wisely

You can pull the plug on social media gradually. You can start choosing a couple of platforms to delete or to limit. You can also fill in the time you would have wasted scrolling through new habits. Try a weekly phone call to a friend or join a new town group doing something you enjoy.

You should expect some withdrawal symptoms. Fewer feelings of connectivity and the occasional fear of missing out happen. Quality social media time is created when you do real social interactions and eliminate the digital chaos.

You can create new habits and a new mood by setting boundaries with social media. You can designate rooms in your house or times of social media use. You should sleep better, have less anxiety, and no more boring interactions.

How to Make Real Connections

Social media alternatives are the most gratifying when they help you connect with people on a human level. You can hear a great laugh on the phone or talk to the people close to you. You can also help those close to be present. Real connections feed you.

Explore out and meet new people by using a phone chat line number. The chat line offers safe and genuine voice conversations; it feels refreshing and real.

A real voice brings a real connection. Try something new and open your mind to honest, real relationships. Phone chat lines offer the simplest and most honest forms of voice communication. Meet new people through the chat line option, take a break from social media, and embrace voice-based communication. Forget fake digital connections. Try real voice-based communication.

Form a genuine conversation. The ultimate connection you’ve been missing out on. Once you try real communication, you won’t miss social media, and you’ll feel more connected than before.
