Disco music is back in the spotlight after 40 years and Star Trek has been influencing culture for more than half a century. Fans from the Czech Republic, the heart of Europe, have taken advantage of this and made a short music and dance film called Can’t Stop, A Star Trek Fan Production. The non-commercial fan production company, called FSFilm, will be celebrating ten years of production in 2024 and has built a starship set and produced more than thirty Star Trek or sci-fi themed fan films. Can’t Stop, A Star Trek Fan Production, directed by Radek Belina is their latest release.
The film is a tribute to the musical group, Village People, which was founded here in New York and laid the foundations for disco music. It is also dedicated to Village People’s lead singer Victor Willis, who visited the Czech Republic with his band in 2022 as part of a concert tour.
The film humorously connects the Star Trek phenomenon with some revised hits from the disco giant, as a crew sent on a mandatory vacation rehearses a dance performance in their spare time and deals with the unexpected intervention of the extra-dimensional being, Q. Although the film features only non-native speakers, it is filmed completely in English and displays the diversity and the vision of collaboration as outlined by Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry in his visionary works. Star Trek fan films are a particular subculture in the science fiction field, one that is also supported by Paramount. As a result, the most avid fans around the world have been making short films from this popular universe for many decades. The most famous series are New Voyages from the State of New York and Continues from Georgia. Many of the fan films have also been made in Europe, such as Intrepid from the United Kingdom or Euderion from Germany.
