These Dogs Do Not Cause Allergies

If you’re thinking about getting a dog but struggle with allergies, you’re not alone. Many people face the same challenge. The good news? Some dog breeds are easier to live with if you’re sensitive to pet dander.

No dog is completely allergy-proof. Still, some breeds shed much less and produce fewer allergens. These dogs are often called hypoallergenic. They can be a better choice for families where someone sneezes or gets itchy eyes around dogs.

We’ve put together a list of 10 dog breeds that are often recommended for allergy sufferers. Each one has its own personality, coat type, and care needs.

1. Poodle

People buy Poodles because they are smart and come in different sizes — toy, miniature, and standard. Their curly coat doesn’t shed much, but it does need brushing and regular trims.

2. Bichon Frise

This small, cheerful dog has a coat that traps dander. That helps keep allergens from spreading. They do need frequent grooming, though.

3. Maltese

Maltese dogs have long, silky hair. Unlike many other breeds, they don’t shed much. You’ll need to brush them often to keep their coat in good shape.

4. Shih Tzu

People in the USA buy Shih Tzus because they are calm and friendly. Their hair is more like human hair, and it doesn’t fall out easily. Regular grooming is key here too.

5. Schnauzer

These dogs come in three sizes and have a wiry coat. They shed very little. They’re also alert and make good watchdogs.

6. Portuguese Water Dog

This breed is active and loves water. Their coat is curly and doesn’t shed much. They’re a great option for active families.

7. Basenji

Basenjis don’t bark and clean themselves like cats. Their short coat sheds very little. They’re known for being independent and quiet.

8. Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier

These dogs have a soft, flowing coat. They don’t shed much but do need brushing a few times a week. They’re good with kids and friendly in nature.

9. Lagotto Romagnolo

Originally used to hunt truffles, Lagottos are loyal and have tight curls. Their coat doesn’t shed much. They’re also easy to train.

10. Afghan Hound

This elegant breed has long, fine hair. With regular care, their coat stays clean and sheds very little. They’re calm but need a bit of space.

Simple Tips to Lower Allergens at Home

Even with a low-shedding dog, you’ll want to keep your home clean. Here are some helpful habits:

  • Bathe your dog weekly
  • Brush them outdoors
  • Clean floors and fabrics often
  • Use an air filter if you can
  • Don’t let your dog sleep in your bed

Small steps like these can really help reduce allergy symptoms.

Conclusion

If allergies have kept you from getting a dog, there’s hope. With the right breed and a little care, it’s possible to enjoy life with a furry friend. The dogs on this list are a great place to start.

Everyone’s body reacts differently, so it’s a good idea to spend time with a dog before making your choice. But with the right match, you might find that a dog and a clean home can go hand in hand.
