- Same-sex activity was made legal in 1976, when most other states still deemed it a criminal offense.
- Discrimination against people for gender identity or sexual orientation has been illegal since 2003
- Trans people may change their legal gender on all official documents without any conditions
- Mental health pros may not conduct conversion therapy on minors.
- Domestic partnerships have been legal since 1999 and same-sex marriage since 2013

- In 2024, just to fully enshrine the legality and respect for same-sex marriage, citizens voted to amend the California Constitution
