Unveiling Whittle: D. DelGaizo on Magic, Adventure, and the Mysteries of Turtle Island

In the world of middle-grade fiction, few stories captivate readers quite like Whittle and the Turtle Island Mysteries. D. DelGaizo’s whimsical tale of adventure, bravery, and self-discovery is a heartfelt journey that blends magical realism with ancient folklore. In this exclusive interview, DelGaizo takes us behind the scenes of his imaginative world, sharing the inspirations, challenges, and magic that shaped his work.

Q: What inspired you to write Whittle and the Turtle Island Mysteries? Was there a specific moment or story that sparked the idea?

The Unfortunate Burden of a Feng Shui Master — Why Master Xu Must Speak the Hard Truth

The Quiet Battles We Fight

Dana Guerin on the Healing Power of Classical Music

A: The inspiration came from a mix of childhood memories, folklore, and a deep appreciation for nature. I’ve always been fascinated by stories of magical creatures and the mysteries of ancient cultures. One night, I dreamt of a turtle with a British accent, and it stayed with me. That whimsical image eventually evolved into Whittle and his incredible adventures.

Q: The story blends elements of magical realism with a sense of adventure. How did you develop this unique combination, and why did you choose it for your protagonist’s journey?

A: Magical realism allows us to see the extraordinary in the everyday, which is something I wanted readers to experience through Whittle’s journey. By blending this with adventure, I could create a narrative where the protagonist’s growth and bravery are as important as the fantastical elements. It’s about seeing the magic in the world around us.

Q: The Lenape folklore and references to “Turtle Island” are pivotal to the story. How much research went into integrating these cultural elements, and what do you hope readers take away from them?

A: A lot of research went into understanding the Lenape people, their beliefs, and their rich connection to nature. I wanted to approach it respectfully while shedding light on the origins of Turtle Island. My hope is that readers come away with an appreciation for Indigenous cultures and the way they teach us to honor the natural world.

Q: Whittle has a distinct personality, blending humor, curiosity, and bravery. How did you shape his character, and are there aspects of yourself or someone you know reflected in him?

A: Whittle’s personality is a blend of traits I admire in the people closest to me—curiosity, resilience, and a sense of humor. His love for adventure mirrors my own as a child, always exploring and imagining magical worlds. In some ways, Whittle represents the playful and brave spirit we all carry but sometimes forget.

Q: What were some of the challenges you faced while writing this book? Were there moments where the story took an unexpected turn for you as a writer?

A: One challenge was ensuring the magical elements didn’t overshadow the emotional depth of the story. Balancing the humor with poignant moments required a lot of fine-tuning. The biggest surprise was when Whittle “decided” to board a bus to catch a flight to the Galapagos—it wasn’t in my original outline, but it felt so right for the character.

Q: The book features illustrations by K.M. Simonsen. How closely did you collaborate with the illustrator, and how do you feel the visuals contribute to the storytelling?

A: K.M. Simonsen and I worked very closely, exchanging ideas and sketches throughout the process. The illustrations breathe life into the story and help readers visualize Whittle’s world. Seeing the artwork felt like discovering the story all over again—it added a layer of magic I hadn’t anticipated.

Q: The story often touches on themes of bravery, trust, and the connection between humans and nature. Why are these themes important to you, and how do they resonate with today’s readers?

A: These themes are timeless and universal. In a world that often feels disconnected, stories like Whittle’s remind us of the strength in trust, the beauty in nature, and the courage it takes to explore the unknown. I believe these messages resonate deeply, especially with younger readers navigating their own journeys.

Q: Who is the intended audience for this book, and what impact do you hope it will have on them? Do you see it as more of an educational journey, an escape, or both?

A: The book is primarily aimed at middle-grade readers, but I’ve found that adults enjoy its charm too. It’s both an educational journey and an escape. I hope it inspires readers to ask questions, seek adventure, and appreciate the wonder in everyday life.

Q: The ending of the story leaves room for future explorations. Do you plan to write sequels or expand the world of Whittle further?

A: Absolutely! Whittle’s adventures are far from over. I’m already brainstorming his next journey—perhaps exploring new mysteries in Turtle Island or venturing beyond it. There’s so much more magic and mischief to uncover.

Q: Finally, what advice would you give to aspiring authors, especially those aiming to weave magic and adventure into their stories?

A: Write what excites you and trust the process. Let your imagination run wild, but always ground your story in emotions and relationships that readers can connect to. And remember—magic isn’t just in the fantastical elements; it’s in the little details that make your world feel alive.

DelGaizo’s Whittle and the Turtle Island Mysteries is more than a book—it’s a gateway to wonder and exploration for readers of all ages. As he hints at Whittle’s future adventures, one thing is clear: the journey is far from over. Whether through laughter, folklore, or the quiet magic of discovery, DelGaizo reminds us that the world is brimming with stories waiting to be told—if only we open our eyes and see.
