The Path of Stones: A Visual Poem Engraving Memories
Set against the backdrop of the traditional stone quarrying culture of Jinyun County in Zhejiang, The Path of Stones traces the development of this craft from the Song Dynasty to the late 20th century. The film captures the daily lives and labor of stonemasons, whose work helped shape the bridges, streets, and homes of the region. Drawing from rare archival footage from the 1990s, LEOW reconstructed their stories, breathing new life into a piece of history that had faded with time.
LEOW utilized artificial intelligence and generative visual technology to restore and enhance the old footage to 4K resolution, projecting it onto the quarry ruins in vivid detail. “These fragmented images are like pieces of time, forgotten over the years. Through the power of technology, they are given a new lease on life, allowing the stories of the stonemasons to be told once more,” LEOW said. Accompanied by his original music, the sound reverberates through the quarry, evoking echoes of the past and lending the visuals a profound emotional depth.
