Creativity exists within all of us, and everybody expresses it in their own unique way. For Matthew Gwyer, this creativity continues to grow each day as he develops his skills as an artist.
Matthew Gwyer is a young artist from Maine. He has been creating art since 2014, practicing from model sketches online that inspired him.
What began as a relaxing hobby has flourished into a deeper passion. Today, Matthew sells his art on his website and presents his work in art galleries.
Matthew Gwyer began the way most artists do: with a pencil, a piece of paper, and an eye for art. First, Matthew says he would browse the internet for images that caught his eye and then attempt to recreate them himself.
Over the years, his sketching has evolved into simple practice as he focuses more on large canvas paintings. Meanwhile, Gwyer reserves his best work for his portfolio.
While studying at the University of Southern Maine, Matthew Gwyer enrolled in a studio art class. This class taught him valuable lessons that he continues to utilize in his work today.
“When I wasn’t doing actual coursework for the class, I was making my own art on my own time,” says Matthew Gwyer.
This class introduced Matthew to the works of famous historical painters like Dali and Van Gogh. Matthew Gwyer would study their work and claims that it taught him a lot about how to think about art.
Soon enough, Matthew Gwyer would begin developing ideas that he would try to bring to the canvas. Not every piece he creates gets finished, but he doesn’t leave any idea to remain just that – an idea.
“I like to try new things out and you know, nothing’s really a mistake because it’s all up to interpretation,” said Matthew Gwyer.
More recently, Matthew Gwyer has begun experimenting with oil painting. He describes the style as “very forgiving,” because of how easy the paint is to manipulate after placing it on the canvas.
Matthew Gwyer is still young and discovering new ways to create art every day. When we sat down with Matthew, we asked him about advice he would give to other aspiring artists. One tip that stood out was to continue experimenting. Reinvent your art style and try new things to help your art grow.
