Ogechi Steiner is an up-and-coming Los Angeles-based artist, with an inspiring story and a big voice. She’s maintained a low profile so far, but is getting ready to make a big splash in the industry soon. She plans to make her debut this month with a mellow cover of Rihanna’s 2012 chart-topping hit Diamonds. An EP is also in the works, one that Ogechi describes as “Creative, experimental, and fun music you can cry or dance to.” Expect a blend of power ballads and sounds that take you back to the 1970s, with lyrics that come from the heart, and amazing visuals to match. Her retro-inspired sound matches her personal style and sets her apart from today’s pop stars who tend to gravitate more towards the 90s and 2000s.
Coming from humble roots, she grew up in Nigeria’s largest city, Lagos, and emigrated to the United States at the young age of 10 in search of a better life. She packed her bags and said goodbye to Durham, North Carolina, and arrived in Los Angeles soon after graduating high school, full of hopes and dreams, where she actively pursued a career in music. She admitted to struggling with feelings of self-doubt when she first started, like so many other artists in bloom do, and even quit a few times. “I spent the majority of my high school years pursuing music, but I gave up because I just didn’t feel good enough.” She didn’t let the fear of failure stop her forever though, and is currently in the midst of carrying out a meticulous game plan set to place her on top of the industry. “Recently I picked it up again and decided to go full send with it.” Ogechi now spends most of her time singing and revising covers, and working on her EP.
Listing acclaimed acts like Nicki Minaj, Doja Cat, and Rihanna as inspiration, it’s no surprise Ogechi has got an ear for good music. Soulful vocals and powerful lyrics are at the center of her art. “My goal is to create impactful music that I enjoy and that inspires others.” In addition to touching the hearts of fans, she dreams of one day topping the Billboard charts and becoming a household name. Ogechi also wants to explore different styles of music throughout her career and get creative with video concepts, visuals, sounds and genres. As for collaborations, the talented songstress is looking forward to getting the chance to work with complementary artists such as Bree Runway, Yung Baby Tate, Chloe x Halle, and Burna Boy, either in the recording studio or behind the pen. No matter what she wants to do, one thing is for sure, Ogechi has got what it takes to make it happen.
Living in a time where musicians no longer need to rely on getting signed to a big label to make it, Ogechi is taking advantage of the virtual world, a world she will soon take over. She is establishing a name for herself on Instagram and is launching her official site this Thursday. In a city like Los Angeles, brimming with dreamers and believers, she proves herself worthy of attention. Her hard work and determination combined with her raw talent will bring her far, and we can’t wait to see what’s coming next. Our forecast for 2021? Ogechi Steiner is definitely going to be someone to watch out for.
Diamonds comes out May 22nd.
